Zero-days-to-expiration options — contracts that expire the same day you buy them — have gone from a niche institutional hedging tool to one of the most popular products on retail brokerage apps in the space of a few years. They're cheap, they're fast, and they turn a small move in the underlying into a huge percentage swing in the option's price. That last part is exactly why they're so dangerous for anyone who doesn't understand the mechanics underneath the excitement.
Why 0DTE Feels So Good to Trade
A same-day option on a major index might cost a few dollars per contract. A half-percent move in the underlying in the right direction can double or triple that price within minutes. That ratio — tiny cost, explosive potential upside — is the entire appeal, and it's genuinely true that some traders make real money doing this. It's also true that the same leverage that doubles your money on a good day can wipe out the entire position on a flat or slightly wrong one, because 0DTE options decay to zero value by the literal end of the trading day if they finish out of the money.
The Mechanic Nobody Explains: Gamma
The reason 0DTE options move so violently is a Greek called gamma — the rate at which an option's sensitivity to the underlying price changes as the underlying moves. Gamma is always highest on the day of expiration, because there's no time left for the option to "average out" a move; every tick in the stock either pushes the option sharply in the money or sharply out of it. That's what creates the lottery-ticket payoff structure. It's also what means time decay (theta) on that same contract is brutal and constant — the option is bleeding value every single minute it doesn't move in your favor, all day, until it hits zero at the close if you're wrong.
In plain terms: on a 0DTE contract, you're not just betting on direction. You're betting on direction happening fast enough, today, before decay erases the premium you paid. Being right about the eventual direction but wrong about the timing still loses the entire trade.
Who's Actually on the Other Side
Every option has a buyer and a seller. On 0DTE contracts, a large share of that flow is retail buying and market makers selling (or hedging around the flow), and market makers manage their risk continuously using the underlying — they're not gambling on direction the way a retail buyer often is. This is part of why 0DTE flow has become large enough that some research has linked heavy same-day options activity to short-term volatility in the underlying index itself. The retail side is playing a directional bet with a hard time limit. The other side is running a hedged market-making operation. Those are not symmetric positions, and it shows in who tends to keep the premium over time.
Where This Actually Fits — If At All
None of this means 0DTE options are unusable. Professional and institutional traders use same-day options constantly, for hedging and for tightly-defined, rules-based strategies with real risk controls attached. The difference is process: a defined edge, a defined position size relative to account risk, and an exit rule that doesn't depend on hope. What's dangerous isn't the instrument — it's using a high-gamma, fast-decaying product as a way to make a directional guess more exciting, without any framework for when you're wrong.
The Practical Filter
- If you can't explain why you expect the move to happen today, specifically — not this week, today — a 0DTE contract is the wrong instrument for that idea.
- Position size any 0DTE trade as if it will expire worthless, because a meaningful share of the time, it will.
- Track your results across dozens of trades, not one lucky double. A handful of triple-digit percentage wins feels like skill; it's frequently variance sitting on top of a negative-expectancy habit.
